How to make a skin pack (.mcpack) for Bedrock Edition
Bundle your skins into a .mcpack file that Bedrock Edition imports by itself: the four files inside, what each one does, and how to zip and test it.
A skin pack is a small zip file with a .mcpack name. Open it on a phone, tablet or Windows PC with Bedrock Edition and the game imports it by itself, with every skin in it listed under the pack's name in the Dressing Room. Here is how to make one by hand, following Microsoft's skin pack guide.
What goes in it
| File | What it does |
|---|---|
| manifest.json | Names the pack and gives it two unique IDs (UUIDs) and a version |
| skins.json | Lists each skin: its name, its picture and its arm model |
| texts/en_US.lang | The names shown in the game, in your language |
| Your skin pictures (.png) | The skins themselves: 64 x 64, or 128 x 128 for HD |
Step by step
- Make a folder for the pack and put your skin PNG files in it.
- Create manifest.json with a header (the pack's name, a UUID and a version) and one module of type skin_pack with a second UUID. Make new UUIDs for every pack; any UUID generator works.
- Create skins.json. For each skin: a localization name, a geometry (geometry.humanoid.custom for Classic arms, geometry.humanoid.customSlim for Slim), the picture's file name, and a type of free. Then the pack's serialize name and localization name.
- Create a texts folder with en_US.lang, giving the names shown for each skin and for the pack.
- Select the files (not the folder around them), zip them, and rename the zip from .zip to .mcpack.
- Open the .mcpack: the game imports it. Find the pack in the Dressing Room under Classic Skins.
Microsoft Learn has the exact text of each file, and a sample pack to compare with; both are linked below.
If the pack does not import
- Check the JSON: one missing comma or quote stops the import. A JSON checker finds these quickly.
- Make sure the files sit at the top of the zip, not inside a folder.
- Give each pack its own new UUIDs.
- If the game does not recognize the skins, turn off Only Allow Trusted Skins (Settings, General), as Microsoft's guide advises.
- Close the game completely and open it again: it reads new packs when it starts.
The packs Scan2Skin 3D makes
Every skin from Scan2Skin 3D comes with a ready-made pack built this way, manifest.json, skins.json, texts/en_US.lang and the skins: the Classic and the Slim version, and for a two-layer skin each one with and without the jacket.
Make a skin now, in your browser: five guided photos with the camera, or photos already taken. Nothing is uploaded. The Scan2Skin 3D app for iPhone and Android adds scan yourself, HD skins and Pro.
