Converting old skins: 64 x 32 to 64 x 64, and Classic to Slim
How to turn an old 64 x 32 skin into a 64 x 64 one, and move a skin between Classic and Slim arms, pixel by pixel in any image editor.
Two conversions come up again and again: an old skin in the 64 x 32 format that should become a modern 64 x 64 one, and a skin drawn for Classic arms that should be worn with Slim arms, or the other way round. Both are pixel work you can do in any image editor that shows a grid.
64 x 32 to 64 x 64
An old skin is the top half of today's texture. It has one arm and one leg, which the game mirrors for the other side, and no outer layer but the hat. To convert it:
- Make a new, transparent image of 64 x 64 pixels and paste the old skin into its top half, at the top-left corner.
- Copy the right leg's area (x 0 to 15, y 16 to 31) into the left leg's area (x 16 to 31, y 48 to 63).
- Copy the right arm's area (x 40 to 55, y 16 to 31) into the left arm's area (x 32 to 47, y 48 to 63).
- In both copies, flip each face horizontally and swap the outer and inner sides, so the left limbs mirror the right ones as the game did.
- Leave the new outer-layer areas (jacket, sleeves and pants legs) transparent, or draw them.
The areas are in the 64 x 64 layout. Wear the result next to our test card: every limb should read the right way round.
Classic to Slim, and back
The two models use the same areas, but Slim arm faces are one column narrower: the front, back, top and underside are 3 pixels wide instead of 4, and the faces shift left. The exact columns are in Classic or Slim.
- Classic to Slim: on each arm and sleeve, drop one column from the front, the back, the top and the underside, where the drawing shows least, and move the faces left to the Slim columns.
- Slim to Classic: add one column to each of those faces, usually by repeating the column beside it, and move the faces right to the Classic columns.
- Do both arms and both sleeves: four areas in all.
Scan2Skin 3D draws every skin in both models from the same photos, so there is nothing to convert there.
