Scan2Skin 3D FAQ: photos, privacy, skins and the game
Answers to common questions: is it free, are photos uploaded, the iPhone and Android apps, HD skins and Pro, consoles, Classic or Slim, two layers, beards, ads.
The skin maker
Is it free?
Yes. Making a skin, the quick fixes, and the head coverings and garments are free. On this website a skin's downloads and the pixel editor are free too; there is nothing to buy. In the iPhone and Android apps the first export of a skin asks for one short video ad, and now and then an ad plays before another skin. Pro is a one-time purchase through the App Store or Google Play: no ads, the pixel editor with beards and jewelry stamps, and HD skins (128 x 128) for Bedrock Edition. If no ad can be shown, the skin is unlocked anyway.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The photos are analyzed on your phone or in your browser and deleted when the capture ends. Nothing is sent to us or anyone else, and only the finished skin is kept, on your device.
Who can I scan?
Yourself, or someone who agrees to it. If you are a child, ask a parent or guardian first; we suggest doing the scan together. People in the background are ignored, but someone standing next to the person stops the photo.
What do I need?
An iPhone (iOS 15 or later) or an Android phone (Android 8.0 or later) with the Scan2Skin 3D app, or a computer or phone with a modern browser for this website. On the website you can use the computer's camera, with a self-timer, or pick photos already taken: five, or a single front photo.
Is there an app for iPhone?
Yes: Scan2Skin 3D for iPhone, with guided photos, scan yourself, HD skins and Pro through the App Store. The walk-around is on Android phones only for now. See the phone app.
What is the difference between the website and the apps?
The website makes the same skins in your browser, from guided photos or photos already taken, and its downloads are free. The apps add scan yourself, the walk-around on Android, HD skins and Pro. The phone app page has a side-by-side table.
How long does it take?
A few minutes for the photos, then a couple of seconds for the skin. A two-layer skin takes ten photos.
Why does the app ask for the camera?
To take the photos, and only then: it asks when you tap New skin, after the scanning notice. The photos stay on the phone.
Why does my skin not look like me?
A skin is 64 x 64 pixels, so it is a portrait in a few dozen colors. Most problems come from the light: a window behind the person, a shadow over the face, or mixed lamps. See photos that make a good skin. The free fixes adjust the skin tone, the hair tone and the clothes' vibrancy, and the editor can change any pixel.
What is a two-layer skin?
For a jacket, hoodie, or coat. The first scan starts with the outer layer off, then a second scan is made with the outer layer on. In game, the outer layer can be put on and taken off the character. A hat worn only for the jacket-on photos is asked about and goes on the outer layer too. See the outer layer guide.
What if the person wears a hat?
The app asks "Is there a hat?" when it sees one, and draws the shape you pick: a beanie, a cap, a visor or a brim all around. "No hat" keeps the hair as it is, and the Hat shape fix changes the answer later.
Can it draw a beard?
The scan does not draw one: the face is only 8 pixels across. In the pixel editor, "Beard & jewelry" and then "Beard…" paints a beard in the colors of the face, which you trim to shape with the pencil.
What are HD skins?
Skins of 128 x 128 pixels for Bedrock Edition on phones, tablets and Windows, with a sharper face, finer stripes and clothing details. The apps make them with Pro; a video ad does not unlock them. Java Edition and consoles use the standard 64 x 64 skin. See HD skins.
How do I get Pro back on a new phone?
Pro is kept by your App Store or Google Play account. In the app, Settings and then "Restore purchases" brings it back.
Using the skin in the game
Which editions does it work with?
Minecraft: Java Edition on computers, and Bedrock Edition on Android, iPhone, iPad and Windows. Guides: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
Can I use my skin on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch?
Not as an imported file: consoles do not import custom skins, according to the official Character Creator FAQ. See skins on consoles for what you can use instead.
Classic or Slim?
The two arm models: Classic arms are 4 pixels wide, Slim arms 3. Both files are always made, so pick the one you like; see Classic or Slim.
My skin does not show up in Bedrock. What now?
Close the game completely and open it again, since it reads new skin packs when it starts. If custom skins are still missing, turn off Only Allow Trusted Skins in Settings, General. Details in the Bedrock guide, and every other fix in skin not working.
My friends see a default skin instead of mine.
In Bedrock Edition that is usually their Only Allow Trusted Skins setting, which is theirs to choose. In Java Edition, other players normally see the skin on your account. See Only Allow Trusted Skins.
This website
Where are my skins kept on the website?
In this site's storage in your browser, on this device. A skin is kept as soon as it is made. Clearing the site's data removes them, and a private window forgets them when it closes.
Why are there ads?
Ads pay for the work, so the skin maker can stay free. They are non-personalized and requested for child-directed treatment. They are never placed inside downloads.
Can I use the free example skins?
Yes, for personal use: download them, wear them and edit them in your own game. Please do not sell them. See the free skins.
Is this an official Minecraft product?
No. Not an official Minecraft product. Not approved by or associated with Mojang or Microsoft.
