Scan2Skin 3D news: what is new in the skin maker
Recent updates to Scan2Skin 3D, newest first: a new front page, the iPhone app, HD skins in the apps, beards, clearer guided photos, and more.
What changed in Scan2Skin 3D, newest first, in plain words. The website gets each change when it is published; the iPhone and Android apps get it with their next update.
Ten more guides, in groups, and Halloween costume skins
The guides now come in groups: start here, put your skin on, fix problems, how skins work, make your own, and a guide for parents. New today: Java or Bedrock, make a skin of yourself, step-by-step guides for iPhone and iPad, Android and Windows, every fix in one place in skin not working, converting old skins, drawing a face at 8 x 8, making a skin pack and a guide for parents.
In the tips: Halloween costume skins, with a costume scan of our own on the way.
Two new guides: Only Allow Trusted Skins, and your Bedrock skin on Java
Two of the questions we are asked most now have guides of their own. Only Allow Trusted Skins explains the Bedrock Edition setting that can make a custom skin show as a default skin, and how to turn it off. Bedrock skin on Java, and back shows how to wear the same skin in both editions, how to get the PNG out of a skin pack, and what cannot be moved.
The Bedrock Edition guide now answers "can you use a custom skin on Bedrock?" first, and the outer layer guide opens with what the outer layer means.
Scan2Skin 3D for Android is on Google Play
The Android app is out on Google Play, free, for phones and tablets with Android 8.0 or later. It takes the five guided photos, scans you on your own with spoken cues, and on phones with ARCore it can walk around the person and pick the photos itself. Pro, bought once through Google Play, removes the ads and adds the pixel editor and HD skins.
Thank you to everyone who tested it before the release: your photos and notes shaped the guided photos, the hat and beard drawing, and the walk-around.
A front page, and a page for the phone app
scan2skin.com opens on a front page now, with the website tool one button away and a page about the phone app. The guides, tips, free skins and FAQ are updated for the iPhone app, HD skins and Pro.
Clearer guided photos
In the apps, a photo that needs a retake is said at once, with a Retake now button, while you go on. "Photo 2 of 5" shows where you are, Back asks before deleting the photos you took, and until the skin is made the review says "Discard photos" in red. The camera is asked for when you tap New skin, not when the app opens.
Beards, and vibrancy in view
The pixel editor's "Beard & jewelry" button paints a beard in the face's own colors to trim to shape; on an HD skin it passes between the nose and the mouth. The Vibrancy slider moved above the 3D preview, so the skin stays in sight while it moves.
A hat for the jacket-on photos
On a two-layer skin, a hat put on only with the jacket is now asked about and drawn on the outer layer. Hat colors come out truer too, no longer darkened by the brim's shadow.
Scan2Skin 3D for iPhone
The iPhone app went to the App Store, with guided photos, scan yourself, HD skins and Pro. The walk-around stays an Android feature for now.
HD skins in the apps
With Pro, the apps make HD skins (128 x 128) for Bedrock Edition: a sharper face, finer stripes and clothing details, as a PNG and a skin pack, and a Fine brush paints single HD pixels. Under the 3D preview, "Add clothes or a head covering" and "Jewelry and decoration" now open the choices directly. The website keeps the standard 64 x 64 skin.
Guides, tips and free skins on the website
New pages: step-by-step guides for Java Edition, Bedrock Edition and consoles, the skin layout and the outer layer; tips for photos, patterns and clothing from around the world; a gallery of free example skins; and an About page with a FAQ.
Make skin answers at once
On the website, the Make skin button now changes to "Making…" the moment you press it, so you can see the skin is on its way while the photos are analyzed.
Clothes and head coverings from around the world
Under every finished skin, "Clothes and head covering (free)" offers head coverings (hijab, turban, patka, kippah, kufi, gele, keffiyeh, a sun hat and a non la), twenty garments from the sari to the kilt, and three kinds of shoes, in colors taken from the photos. They are never guessed: the person chooses.
The pixel editor gets "Jewelry and decoration…": bindi, earrings, bangles, henna and more, as stamps. Read how they are drawn in clothing from around the world.
Tops in sections
A top made of different parts, such as a checked yoke above a plain middle and a striped hem, is drawn part by part instead of as one color.
Stripes, patterns, gloves and boots
Striped skirts, tops and sleeves are drawn as stripes in their own colors; patterns on shirts, jackets and dresses are drawn across the whole garment. Gloves and tall boots are recognized, necklines and buns are drawn, and the hat question has a fifth answer: a visor.
Belts, sleeves and a hair tone fix
Belts are drawn, each arm gets its own sleeve length, headphones show over a hat, and when a hat makes the hair look too dark, a new free "Hair tone" fix picks a better one.
My skins keeps every skin on the website
A skin made on the website is kept in My skins as soon as it shows, with every fix after that, so closing the tab no longer loses it. In the Android app the guided capture no longer waits for each photo's check, and a face in shadow gets its own hint.
Two-layer skins on the website
The website can now make two-layer skins: ten guided photos, jacket off and then on, and the jacket goes on the outer layer so it can be taken off in the game. The help became plain web pages too.
Patterned trousers
Plaid and patterned trousers are drawn as patterns, and camouflage as a speckle of its colors.
scan2skin.com is live
The skin maker runs in the browser at scan2skin.com, with its own camera and a self-timer on the shutter, so you can step back into place before the photo is taken.
The Android app
Scan2Skin 3D for Android: guided photos with an outline for each view, a walk-around capture on Android phones with ARCore depth, a self-scan for photographing yourself, two-layer skins, My skins and the pixel editor.
