Skin not working? Every fix, by symptom
A custom skin that shows as a default skin, has black patches or a stripe on the arms, or will not upload: find what you see and the fix, for Java and Bedrock Edition.
Most skin problems come down to a handful of causes: a setting, the arm model, the file, or where the game keeps skins. Find what you see below; each fix links to the guide with the details.
The skin shows as a default skin
- In Bedrock Edition, turn off Only Allow Trusted Skins (Settings, General). See Only Allow Trusted Skins.
- If only other players see a default skin, it is usually their own Only Allow Trusted Skins setting, which is theirs to choose.
- In Java Edition, make sure the skin was saved to your account: select Save & Use in the Launcher's Skins tab, then join the world again.
The skin is missing after opening a skin pack
- Close the game completely and open it again: Bedrock reads new packs when it starts. How to close it fully: iPhone and iPad, Android.
- Look in the Dressing Room under Classic Skins: the pack is listed under its own name.
A stripe or a gap on the arms
The arm model does not match the file. Wear it again with the other model: Classic (the Java Launcher calls it Wide) or Slim. See Classic or Slim.
Black or solid patches, or holes
Transparent pixels in the base layer do not show as see-through; they turn into solid patches. Fill the base layer completely and keep transparency for the outer layer. See the outer layer.
The upload is refused, or the skin looks scrambled
- Use a PNG file. A JPEG, or a picture saved again by a photo app, will not work.
- Check the size: 64 x 64 (or the old 64 x 32). Bedrock also takes 128 x 128; Java does not.
- Parts in the wrong places mean the drawing does not follow the skin layout. Wear our test card to check: see the 64 x 64 layout.
- An old 64 x 32 skin can be converted: see converting old skins.
Parts of the skin are missing in Java Edition
Each player can hide parts of the outer layer in Options, Skin Customization: the hat, jacket, sleeves and pants legs. Turn them back on. Black arms on a slim skin mean a version older than 1.8, which has no slim arms.
The skin is on one device but not another
Bedrock Edition keeps an imported skin on the device that imported it, so import it on each device. Consoles cannot import custom skins at all: see skins on consoles. In Java Edition the skin is on your account and shows on every computer.
A pixel floats above the head
A stray pixel on the hat layer floats half a pixel above the head. Clear it in a skin editor.
Make a skin now, in your browser: five guided photos with the camera, or photos already taken. Nothing is uploaded. The Scan2Skin 3D app for iPhone and Android adds scan yourself, HD skins and Pro.
