Custom skins on Xbox, PlayStation and Switch: what is possible

Can you import a custom skin on Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch? What the official FAQ says, what you can use instead, and why imported skins do not sync.

Updated October 12, 2026

Consoles run Bedrock Edition, the same game as phones and Windows, but they do not let you import a skin file of your own. It is one of the most common questions about skins, so here is what the official pages say and what you can do instead.

What the official FAQ says

The Character Creator FAQ on minecraft.net answers a console player who cannot use custom skins: there are no plans to support importing custom skins on consoles. The same FAQ says importing works on Windows and on mobile devices, and that custom skins do not sync between devices. Xbox Support's page on dressing up your character gives console players the Dressing Room, the Character Creator and skins from packs they own, with no step for uploading a file.

Age of the sourceThe FAQ dates from 2019. We looked for a newer official statement on 2026-10-04 and found none, and we have not tested on a console ourselves. If that changes, the official pages below will say so first.

Why a skin from your phone does not show up on your console

An imported skin is kept on the device that imported it, not on your account. So a skin imported on a phone stays on that phone, even when you sign in to the same Microsoft account on an Xbox, a PlayStation or a Switch.

What you can use on a console

Tricks that circulate online to get an imported skin onto a console are not supported by the game's makers, can stop working with any update, and some ask you to install things you should not trust. We do not recommend them.

If you play on a console and on another device, you can still wear your skin on the other device, and build a look-alike in the Character Creator for the console using the skin as a reference for colors.
