How to put your Bedrock skin on Java Edition, and back
A custom skin is the same 64 x 64 PNG in both editions. How to move it from Bedrock to Java and back, get the PNG out of a skin pack, and what cannot be moved.
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition use the same kind of skin file: a PNG picture of 64 by 64 pixels, laid out the same way (see the skin layout). So a skin you made for one edition works in the other. What differs is where it is kept: Java Edition keeps your skin on your account, while Bedrock Edition keeps an imported skin on the device you imported it on.
From Bedrock to Java
- Find the skin's PNG file, the one you imported into Bedrock. If you only have a skin pack, get the PNG out of it first (see below).
- Check its size: Java Edition takes 64 x 64 (or the older 64 x 32). A 128 x 128 HD skin is for Bedrock; use a 64 x 64 version of it.
- In the Minecraft Launcher, select Minecraft: Java Edition, open the Skins tab and select New Skin.
- Choose the arm model the skin was drawn for (the Launcher calls Classic "Wide"), select Browse and pick the PNG.
- Select Save & Use.
Bedrock Edition has no button to export a skin you imported, so keep the original file. More steps and fixes in the Java Edition guide.
Getting the PNG out of a skin pack
A skin pack is a zip file with a .mcpack name. On a computer, make a copy of the pack, rename the copy from .mcpack to .zip, and open it: the skins are the PNG files inside. Skins from Scan2Skin 3D also download as separate PNG files, Classic and Slim, so you rarely need to do this.
From Java to Bedrock
- Copy the PNG you uploaded to Java Edition onto the phone, tablet or Windows PC that runs Bedrock.
- In the game, open the Dressing Room, then Classic Skins.
- Under Owned, select Import, then Choose New Skin, and pick the PNG.
- Choose Classic or Slim to match the file.
The full steps, and the setting that can hide custom skins, are in the Bedrock Edition guide and Only Allow Trusted Skins.
What cannot be moved
- Character Creator items and Marketplace skins: they belong to Bedrock Edition and are not PNG files you can download, so they cannot be worn in Java Edition.
- HD skins of 128 x 128: Bedrock only. Java Edition needs 64 x 64.
- Skins on consoles: Bedrock on Xbox, PlayStation and Switch cannot import a skin file at all.
One skin for both editions
Scan2Skin 3D makes a 64 x 64 skin that works in both editions: the PNG files for Java Edition and for Bedrock's Dressing Room, and a skin pack for Bedrock on phones and Windows, from the same photos.
Make a skin now, in your browser: five guided photos with the camera, or photos already taken. Nothing is uploaded. The Scan2Skin 3D app for iPhone and Android adds scan yourself, HD skins and Pro.
