Only Allow Trusted Skins: why a custom skin does not show
What the Only Allow Trusted Skins setting in Bedrock Edition does, why a custom skin may show as a default skin, how to turn it off, and what about Java Edition.
Only Allow Trusted Skins is a setting in Bedrock Edition, the version of the game on phones, tablets, Windows and consoles. It decides whether the game shows skins that did not come from a verified source, such as a PNG you imported yourself or a skin pack from outside the Marketplace. When it is on, a custom skin can seem to disappear: you, or other players, may see a default skin instead.
Where to find the setting
- Start the game and select Settings on the main menu.
- Open General.
- Find Only Allow Trusted Skins. Turn it off to see custom skins, or on to show only trusted ones.
Why your own skin does not show
If the game does not recognize a skin you imported, or your custom skins are missing, Microsoft's guide to skin packs gives one fix: turn Only Allow Trusted Skins off. The Minecraft Help Center also lists skins from unverified sources as one cause of errors when connecting to a world.
Why other players see a default skin
Every player has the setting in their own game. When another player has it on, they may see your imported skin as a default skin even though you see your own. That is their choice, and nothing in your skin file can change it.
If your skin still does not show
- Close the game completely and start it again: the game reads new skins and packs when it starts.
- Check the file: a PNG of 64 x 64 pixels (or 128 x 128 on Bedrock), not a JPEG or a resized photo.
- A stripe of stray pixels on the arms means the arm model does not match: import it again as Classic or Slim.
- Imported skins do not sync between devices: import the skin on each phone, tablet or PC you play on.
- On Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, custom skins cannot be imported at all (see skins on consoles).
- Every other symptom and its fix: skin not working.
Is there a trusted skins setting in Java Edition?
Only Allow Trusted Skins is a Bedrock Edition setting. In Java Edition your skin belongs to your account: you upload it in the Minecraft Launcher's Skins tab or on your profile page, and the game shows it from there (see the Java Edition guide). If parts of a skin are missing in Java Edition, check Skin Customization in the game's Options, where each player can hide the hat, jacket, sleeves and pants legs of the outer layer.
Make a skin now, in your browser: five guided photos with the camera, or photos already taken. Nothing is uploaded. The Scan2Skin 3D app for iPhone and Android adds scan yourself, HD skins and Pro.
