Photo checks and retake hints: what each message means
Every photo is checked before it counts: one person, the whole body in the frame, the right view, and eyes that can be read. The hints say what to change.
Every photo is checked on the phone before it counts: one person only (people further back, in the background, are ignored), the whole body in the frame for the body views, a large enough face for the close-up, and the view the slot asked for. The hint says what to change:
“Someone else is standing in the photo with the person being scanned. Ask them to step out of the frame, then take it again.”
“Part of the body is outside the frame. Step back until head and feet both fit.”
“The face is too small. Move closer so the head and shoulders fill the frame.”
“This looks like the left side view.”
The close-up also checks the eyes, because the skin's eye color is read from them, and the light on the face, which the eye whites show:
“The eyes are nearly closed. Keep them open and look at the camera for this one.”
“There is a reflection on the glasses. Tilt the glasses or the device a little and take it again.”
“Your face is in shadow. Face a lamp or a window, or take off the cap, and take it again.”
After a second refusal the app offers a way out: "Use this photo anyway". If that is not possible, you can use this photo anyway. The eyes on the skin may not come out right. For a face in shadow it says instead: "If that is not possible, you can use this photo anyway. The face may come out darker than it is, so the app will brighten it."
