Stack calculator: items to stacks, shulker boxes and chests
Turn a number of items into stacks, shulker boxes, chests and double chests, or the other way around, for items that stack to 64, 16 or 1.
Big builds and farms are counted in stacks and shulker boxes, not in single items. This calculator turns any amount into every unit at once: how many stacks, how many shulker boxes or chests, and how many double chests, for items that stack to 64, to 16 or not at all. It works the other way too: ask for 3 shulker boxes of stone and it tells you that is 5,184 blocks.
How to use it
- Choose the stack size of the item: 64 for most blocks, 16 for items like ender pearls and signs, 1 for items that do not stack.
- Enter the amount, and choose what it is counted in: items, stacks, shulker boxes, chests or double chests.
- Read every equivalent in the table. Exactly shows the fraction, and To hold them shows how many whole containers you need.
The numbers to remember
- A stack is 64 items for most blocks and items.
- A chest, an ender chest, a barrel and a shulker box each have 27 slots: 1,728 items in stacks of 64.
- A double chest has 54 slots: 3,456 items in stacks of 64.
- Your inventory has 36 slots, not counting armor and the offhand: 2,304 items in stacks of 64.
- A chest full of full shulker boxes holds 27 × 27 = 729 stacks: 46,656 items in stacks of 64. A double chest of them holds 93,312.
Items that stack to 16
Ender pearls, snowballs, eggs (including the blue and brown ones), signs and hanging signs of every wood, empty buckets, banners, armor stands, honey bottles and written books. A shulker box of them holds 432.
Items that do not stack
Anything with durability: tools, weapons, armor, bows, crossbows, tridents, maces, shields, elytra, fishing rods and shears. Also potions of every kind, boats, minecarts, saddles, cakes, music discs, enchanted books, books and quills, totems of undying, shulker boxes, bundles, and buckets that hold something (water, lava, milk, powder snow or a fish). A shulker box holds just 27 of them.
Questions
How many items fit in a shulker box?
27 stacks: 1,728 items that stack to 64, 432 items that stack to 16, and 27 items that do not stack. A chest holds exactly the same; the shulker box keeps its contents when you break it and carry it.
Can I put a shulker box inside a shulker box?
No. The game does not let a shulker box go into another one, so the biggest portable load is an inventory or an ender chest full of filled shulker boxes. That is why the table counts chests full of shulker boxes: 27 boxes of 27 stacks each.
How many shulker boxes do I need for a build?

Is it the same on Bedrock Edition?
The containers are the same size on Bedrock Edition, and most stack sizes match, though not every one. The lists on this page come from Java Edition 26.3; if an item stacks differently in your game, pick the stack size it shows.
